Electric vehicles (EVs) are growing fast in India. The Indian government is giving strong support. In September 2024, the Ministry of Heavy Industries started a new plan called PM e-Drive. This plan will help more people use EVs, build more charging stations, and grow EV manufacturing in India.
The government has set a budget of ₹10,900 crore for two years (October 2024 to March 2026). Out of this, ₹2,000 crore is only for building public EV charging stations across the country.
Power Usage Going Up
Delhi is using the most electricity for EV charging in India. From April 2024 to February 2025, India used 763 million units of electricity at EV charging stations.
- Delhi used 40.1% of this.
- Maharashtra used 192.3 million units, and
- Karnataka used 64.7 million units.
- Gujarat is also in the top four.
These four states use over 80% of all electricity for EV charging in India.
Big Increase in Charging Stations
From 2017 to 2024, India added many new EV charging points, both slow and fast chargers.
According to a report by the International Energy Agency (IEA):
- In 2017, India had only 220 slow chargers.
- In 2024, it increased to 47,000 slow chargers.

Slow chargers take 6–8 hours to charge a vehicle. They are mostly used at homes or offices.
- In 2018, India had only 25 fast chargers.
- In 2024, it increased to 28,000 fast chargers.
Fast chargers work quickly and are good for public places.
By 2030, India may have:
- 2 lakh (200,000) slow chargers
- 1.6 lakh (160,000) fast chargers
Difference Between States
Not all states have the same number of charging stations. Some states have more, some have less:
Charging stations per 1 lakh (100,000) people:
- Delhi: 8.8
- Goa: 8.6
- Karnataka: 8.4
- Maharashtra: 2.9
- Rajasthan & Gujarat: 1.4
Bihar, Jharkhand, and West Bengal have very few charging stations compared to their population.
The average in India is only 1.8 charging stations per 1 lakh people.

Green India – Saving Fuel and Reducing Pollution
EVs are good for the environment.
According to the PM e-Drive data:
- EVs save about 15.5 lakh litres of fuel every day.
- They also reduce 22.6 lakh kilograms of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions daily.
