Rahul Gandhi, Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, has made a serious allegation. He said the 2024 Maharashtra assembly election was not fair.
He compared it to a match-fixing in sports, saying that cheating may help a party win, but it damages democracy.
He warned that the same rigging method could happen next in Bihar, or anywhere the ruling party BJP is losing.
What Did He Say?
Rahul Gandhi posted on X (Twitter) and shared an article titled “Match-Fixing Maharashtra”. In it, he explains how the election may have been manipulated.
How to steal an election?
— Rahul Gandhi (@RahulGandhi) June 7, 2025
Maharashtra assembly elections in 2024 were a blueprint for rigging democracy.
My article shows how this happened, step by step:
Step 1: Rig the panel for appointing the Election Commission
Step 2: Add fake voters to the roll
Step 3: Inflate voter… pic.twitter.com/ntCwtPVXTu
His 5-Step Allegation:
- Rig the appointment of the Election Commission panel.
- Add fake voters to the list.
- Increase voter turnout artificially.
- Target bogus voting in areas where BJP needs to win.
- Hide or block the evidence from public view.
Voter Numbers That Don’t Add Up
Rahul Gandhi pointed out strange increases in the number of voters:
- In 5 years (2019 to May 2024), only 31 lakh voters were added.
- But in just 5 months (May to November 2024), 41 lakh more voters appeared.
- This total reached 9.70 crore voters, more than the actual adult population of Maharashtra (9.54 crore).
He said this sudden increase is “incredible and suspicious.”
Strange Jump in Turnout Numbers
Rahul also talked about polling day turnout:

- At 5 PM, turnout was 58.22%.
- But the final turnout next morning was reported as 66.05%.
- That’s a sudden rise of 7.83%, equal to 76 lakh voters, which is unusual and unexplained.
Specific Booths Targeted?
He also claimed:
“New voters were mostly added in 12,000 booths from 85 constituencies, where the BJP eventually won.”
This suggests, according to him, that voter manipulation was focused only in places BJP needed to win.
Democracy is Being Rigged Like a Game
Rahul Gandhi said such actions hurt the trust of people and damage institutions.
“Voter lists and CCTV footage should protect democracy — not be locked up,” he wrote.
He admitted he doesn’t question all elections, but said some recent outcomes — especially Maharashtra 2024 — look very strange.

Warning for Bihar
He warned:
What happened in Maharashtra can happen in Bihar next, or in any state where BJP is afraid of losing.
